Anemia of chronic disease (ACD) refers to a group of anemias secondary to chronic infection, inflammation, and malignant tumors, characterized by shortened red blood cell lifespan, impaired iron metabolism, increased inflammatory cytokines leading to decreased erythropoietin, and suppressed compensatory proliferation response of the bone marrow to anemia.
