Non-venereal syphilis
Endemic syphilis (nonvenereal syphilis) is an endemic disease caused by type II Treponema pallidum and is not sexually transmitted. Human-to-human transmission is mainly through mucous membrane contact. The body is infected when it comes into contact with tableware, beverage cups or felt products contaminated by pathogens. The most common is secondary oral mucosal plaques. Untreated secondary endemic syphilis can heal itself in 6 to 9 months. Tertiary lesions are colloid ulcers on the skin, nasopharynx and bones. A single dose of benzathine penicillin is effective in treating this disease and its contacts.
