The kidneys are located deep inside the body and are protected by fat capsules and surrounding tissue structures, so they are less likely to be injured. Kidney injuries are mostly caused by firearms, stab wounds, and local direct or indirect violence. Depending on the degree of trauma, they are divided into four types: contusion, laceration, fragmentation, and renal pedicle injury. Kidney injuries account for about 65% of all genitourinary tract injuries. The causes include blunt trauma (80%), penetrating trauma (increased during war and in high-crime areas), and iatrogenic injuries (due to surgery, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, or renal biopsy). Complications include persistent bleeding, urine extravasation, abscess formation, and hypertension.
