Humeral surgical neck fracture
The surgical neck of the humerus is located 2 to 3 cm below the anatomical neck and above the insertion point of the pectoralis major muscle. This is the transition from cancellous bone to compact bone and is slightly thinner. It is an anatomical weak link and fractures are common. It can occur at all ages, but more so in the elderly. Fractures of the surgical neck of the humerus are often severely displaced and cause more local bleeding, so special attention should be paid.
