Pine caterpillar disease is a disease discovered in the 1970s. It is caused by direct or indirect contact with pine caterpillars. It can last from a few hours to a few days. Local dermatitis and joint swelling and pain will occur. Mild cases usually heal within a few days, but severe cases can last for several years and cause permanent bone and joint damage, with varying degrees of joint dysfunction. It is most common in exposed areas such as the wrists and feet.
