Glanders is an infectious disease caused by Burkholderia mallei. It was originally an infectious disease that was more common in single-hoofed animals such as horses, mules and donkeys. People are infected by contact with sick animals or objects contaminated with pathogenic bacteria. The main clinical manifestations are acute fever, cellulitis, necrosis, abscesses and granulomas in the respiratory tract, skin, muscles, etc. Some are chronic, with intermittent attacks, and the course of the disease can last for several years. Aristotle recorded this disease in 330 BC and named it "Malleus" (meaning malignant) in Latin. Apeyrtos (375 AD) observed glanders in horses. Royer (1837) first described human glanders. Löffer and Schütz (1882) first detected the pathogenic bacteria from horses that died of glanders. In 1985, this bacterium was named Pseudomonas mallei. In 1993, it was included in the genus Burkholderia.
