Chronic fibrous thyroiditis
Chronic fibrous thyroiditis is a relatively rare thyroid inflammation characterized by the replacement of normal thyroid tissue with a large amount of dense fibrous tissue. Riedel (1897) first described this disease, so it is also called Riedel's thyroiditis (RT). RT has many other names, such as aggressive fibrous thyroiditis, chronic wood-like thyroiditis, Riedel's goiter, chronic sclerosing thyroiditis, etc. Riedel's research under the microscope showed that RT did not have the characteristics of a malignant tumor, and that simply resecting the isthmus of the thyroid gland in a wedge shape could effectively relieve the symptoms of tracheal compression.
