Encephalocele
An encephalocele is a congenital skull defect through which part of the central nervous system herniates out of the skull. If the contents of the skull herniate consist only of cerebrospinal fluid and meninges, it is called a meningocele. If the contents consist of brain tissue and meninges, it is called a meningoencephalocele. If the herniation contains brain tissue, meninges, and ventricles, it is called a hydrocephalic meningoencephalocele.
