Tuberculous empyema
Tuberculous empyema is caused by severe infection of the pleural cavity with tuberculosis bacteria, resulting in accumulation of purulent exudate. Acid-fast bacilli (>70%) can often be found in pleural effusion smears or cultures. Chronic empyema often develops due to delayed diagnosis of the cause or improper treatment. Surgical treatment is only required for chronic tuberculous empyema or tuberculous empyema with secondary mixed infection.
