This product is a third-generation cephalosporin with a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect. It is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic produced against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It has strong activity against Enterobacteriaceae. The MIC90 for Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Citrobacter fluorescens, indole-positive Proteus, Providencia and Serratia is between 0.12 and 0.25 mg/L. Enterobacter cloacae, Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are poorly sensitive to this product. It has a strong antibacterial effect on Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis, and also has a good effect on hemolytic streptococci and pneumococci. The MIC for Staphylococcus aureus is 2 to 4 mg/L. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococci and enterococci are resistant to this product. Most Bacteroides fragilis are resistant to this product.

The antibacterial spectrum is broader than that of ampicillin and carbenicillin. It has high activity against both Gram-positive bacteria (including anaerobic cocci and bacilli) and Gram-negative bacteria. Comparative studies have shown that the antibacterial effect of chloramphenicol is 7 to 10 times stronger than that of carbenicillin against mouse infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa; 2 to 15 times stronger against Escherichia coli; 8 times stronger against Klebsiella pneumoniae, and 2 times stronger against hemolytic Streptococcus.

It has an irreversible inhibitory effect on most important β-lactamases produced by β-lactam antibiotic-resistant strains, protecting β-lactam antibiotics from hydrolysis and destruction by β-lactamases of resistant bacteria. It can combine with certain penicillin-binding proteins to enhance its effect on sensitive strains.
