99mTc-phytate chelates with calcium ions in the blood to form insoluble 99mTc-phytate calcium colloidal particles (20-40nm in diameter), which are cleared from the blood by the reticuloendothelial system. 90% accumulate in the Kupffer cells of the liver, 2%-3% enter the spleen, and 8% enter the bone marrow. Space-occupying, destructive or ischemic lesions in the liver cannot concentrate phytate calcium colloidal particles, and areas of reduced radioactivity or defects appear, thus showing the lesions. When liver function is significantly impaired, compensatory concentration in the spleen and bone marrow increases, and sometimes even the lungs are visualized; when the spleen is hyperactive, there is also varying degrees of visualization.
