Antithyroid drugs. Appearance

This product is white or slightly yellow tablets.

Indication

Used for various types of hyperthyroidism, especially for: 1. Patients with mild disease and mild to moderate thyroid enlargement; 2. Adolescents, children and elderly patients; 3. Patients with recurrence after thyroid surgery who are not suitable for radioactive 131I treatment; 4. Pre-operative preparation; 5. As an adjuvant treatment for 131I radiotherapy.

Usage and Dosage

For the treatment of hyperthyroidism in adults, the starting dose is generally 300 mg per day, ranging from 150-400 mg depending on the severity of the disease, taken orally in divided doses, with a maximum daily dose of 600 mg. The dose is gradually reduced after the disease is under control, and the maintenance dose is 50-150 mg per day, adjusted according to the disease; the starting dose for children is 4 mg/kg per day, taken orally in divided doses, and the maintenance dose is reduced as appropriate.

Adverse Reactions

Common adverse reactions include headache, dizziness, joint pain, swollen salivary glands and lymph nodes, and gastrointestinal reactions; there are also allergic reactions such as rash and drug fever, and some rashes can develop into exfoliative dermatitis. Some patients may suffer from jaundice and toxic hepatitis. The most serious adverse reaction is agranulocytosis, so blood counts should be checked regularly during medication. When the white blood cell count is lower than 4×109/L or the neutrophil count is lower than 1.5×109/L, the medication should be discontinued or adjusted as directed by the doctor.

Precautions

It is contraindicated for patients with severe liver damage, severe leukocyte deficiency, and allergy to thiourea drugs.

Special Population Medication

Precautions for children: Hypothyroidism should be avoided during medication for children. Precautions for pregnancy and lactation: Use with caution for pregnant women and prohibit use for lactating women. Precautions for the elderly: The dosage should be reduced for the elderly, especially those with renal impairment. If hypothyroidism is found, thyroid tablets should be added.

Drug Interactions

This product combined with oral anticoagulants can increase the efficacy of the latter. Sulfonamides, para-aminosalicylic acid, phenylbutazone, barbiturates, phentolamine, tolazoline, vitamin B12, sulfonylureas, etc. can inhibit thyroid function and cause goiter, so be careful when using this product. In addition, the intake of high-iodine foods or drugs can aggravate hyperthyroidism, increase the amount of antithyroid drugs required or prolong the duration of medication, so you should avoid taking iodine before taking this product.
