Cyproterone Acetate Tablets

Function and Efficacy

This drug is an anti-androgen inhibitor that can inhibit the effects of male sex hormones (androgens). Androgens can also be produced in small amounts by female organs and also play a certain role as progesterone and anti-gonadotropin. For men, treatment with this drug can reduce sexual desire and sexual function, and inhibit gonadal function. These changes are reversible after stopping treatment. This drug can protect androgen-dependent target organs, such as the prostate, from the effects of androgens derived from the gonads and/or adrenal cortex. For women, this drug can reduce hirsutism, androgen-dependent alopecia and increased sebaceous gland function. Ovarian function is suppressed during treatment.

Indication

Reduced libido in male paraphiliacs; inoperable prostate cancer; and in women with signs of severe virilization: such as very severe hirsutism, severe androgen-dependent hair loss, and eventually baldness (severe androgenic alopecia), often accompanied by severe acne and/or seborrhea.

Usage and Dosage

Reducing sexual desire in male paraphilia: Generally, treatment starts with 1 tablet bid, which can be increased to 2 tablets bid if necessary, or even 2 tablets tid in the short term. The drug should be swallowed with a small amount of liquid after meals. When a satisfactory effect is achieved, the lowest possible dose should be tried to maintain the effect, often 2 times a day, half a tablet each time is sufficient. When establishing a maintenance dose or stopping the drug, it should not be abrupt but should be reduced gradually, reducing the daily dose by 1 tablet or preferably half a tablet at intervals of several weeks. In order to stabilize the therapeutic effect, the drug must be used for a period of time, and if possible, psychological treatment methods should be used at the same time. Inoperable prostate cancer: After orchiectomy, to eliminate the effects of adrenal cortex androgens: 2 tablets each time, 1-2 times a day (i.e. 100-200 mg). Without orchiectomy: 2 tablets each time, 2-3 times a day (i.e. 200-300 mg). The therapeutic dose should not be changed or interrupted after symptoms change or alleviated. To reduce the initial increase in male sex hormones during treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (LH-Rha): start with this drug alone, 2 tablets each time, twice a day (i.e. 200 mg) for 5-7 days, followed by 2 tablets of this drug each time, twice a day (total 200 mg), used simultaneously with an LH-Rha for 3-4 weeks. To eliminate the effects of adrenal cortical androgens during LH-Rha treatment: continuous anti-androgen therapy, take this drug 2 tablets each time, 1-2 times a day (i.e. 100-200 mg). Severe signs of masculinization in women: such as very severe hirsutism, severe androgen-dependent hair loss, and ultimately baldness (severe androgenic alopecia), often accompanied by severe acne and/or seborrhea. Treatment of women of childbearing age should be started on the first day of the menstrual cycle (i.e. the first day of bleeding), and only women with amenorrhea can start drug treatment immediately. In this case, the first day of treatment is regarded as the first day of the cycle, and routine observation is carried out according to the following recommended usage. On days 1-10 of the cycle, swallow 2 tablets of this medicine with water after meals every day. In addition, these women also take preparations containing estrogen and progesterone, such as 1 oral contraceptive pill every day from days 1-21 of the menstrual cycle, to provide necessary contraceptive protection and stabilize the menstrual cycle. Women receiving cyclical combined treatment should take the medicine at a fixed time every day. If the fixed medication time is exceeded by 12 hours, the contraceptive effect of the current cycle may be reduced, but this medicine and oral contraceptive pills should still be taken as instructed to avoid early bleeding in the current cycle. Missed pills can be ignored, but non-hormonal contraceptive methods should be added for the rest of the cycle (except the safe period method and temperature measurement method). There is a 7-day observation period after taking the medicine for 21 days. During this period, withdrawal bleeding will occur. After 4 weeks from the start of the first course of treatment, that is, on the same day of the week, the next cycle of combined treatment will start regardless of whether bleeding has stopped. If bleeding does not occur during the withdrawal period, necessary diagnostic tests should be performed. After clinical symptoms improve, the daily dose of this drug can be reduced to 1 or half a tablet within the first 10 days of combined treatment, and oral contraceptives alone may be sufficient. This drug can be used alone in postmenopausal or hysterectomy patients. Depending on the severity of symptoms, the average dosage of this drug should be 1 to half a tablet once a day for 21 days, followed by 7 days of discontinuation.
