      Phosphorus Pentoxide(P2O5)

Phosphorus pentoxide, is a kind of inorganic compound, chemical formula P2O5, white powder, insoluble in acetone, ammonia, soluble in sulfuric acid, mainly used as desiccant, dehydrating agent, can also be used in the manufacture of high purity phosphoric acid, phosphate and pesticides.

Relative density 2.30I melting point 340℃, 360℃ sublimation. Soluble in sulfuric acid, insoluble in ammonia and acetone. When it meets water, phosphoric acid is formed and a lot of heat is released. When it comes into contact with organic matter, it burns. Corrosive to the skin. Exposure to organic matter poses a burning hazard. Heat or moisture release heat, release toxic corrosive smoke. It is highly corrosive.

Used as a raw material for the production of high purity phosphoric acid, phosphates and phosphate esters, and also used in the manufacture of phosphorus pentoxide sol and H-type aerosol. Can be used as gas and liquid desiccant, organic synthesis of dehydrating agent. Antistatic agent of synthetic fiber and refined preparation of sugar. It is also used in the manufacture of optical glass, UV permeable glass, heat insulation glass, microcrystalline glass and milky glass, so as to improve the dispersion coefficient of glass and the ability of UV permeable glass. Also used in the production of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, surfactants.

    security

Irritant to skin and mucous membrane. The maximum allowable concentration is 1mg/ma. The production site should be well ventilated, and the staff should take good protection. If the skin is accidentally touched, it should be immediately washed with water. Should be stored in a cool, ventilated and dry storeroom. Containers must be airtight. Do not store and transport with inflammable articles, organic articles, oxidants, etc. Moisture and water should be isolated. The transportation process shall be rain - proof, moisture-proof and sun - proof. When fire is on fire, do not use water to extinguish it. Dry yellow sand and dry powder extinguishers can be used to extinguish it, but do not use water.

    Water Solubility:

soluble in sulfuric acid. Insoluble in acetone and ammonia. Decomposes in water.Readily absorbs moisture from the air forming a syrup of meta-, pyro-, and orthophosphoric acids. Reacts violently with water releasing considerable heat [Oldbury Chemicals, p. 9].

    Storage Conditions:

    Flammability characteristics:

Non-combustible. But encountering water and organic materials such as wood, cotton or straw, it reacts violently to release heat, may cause a fire.

    Experimental Properties:

Very deliquescent. Readily absorbs moisture from the air. Exothermic hydrolysis by water to form phosphoric acid. The reaction with alcohol is similar.|Heat of formation: -365.83 kcal/mole. Specific heat: 0.170 cal/g/ °C. Heat of fusion: 8.2 kcal/mole.|Sublimation temperature 360 °C.|Most important chemical property is its avidity for water. Below 100 °C, it is one of the most dehydrating agents known, extracting water from substances that are considered good dehydrating agents. For example it converts pure HNO3 to N2O5, H2SO4 to SO3, dehydrates amides to nitriles, reacts with alcohols to produce esters of simple and polymeric phosphoric acids, and effects ring closures and other condensation reactions.|For more Other Experimental Properties (Complete) data for PHOSPHORUS PENTOXIDE (6 total), please visit the HSDB record page.

    Air and Water Reactions:

Readily absorbs moisture from the air forming a syrup of meta-, pyro-, and orthophosphoric acids. Reacts violently with water releasing considerable heat [Oldbury Chemicals, p. 9]. There is a possibility that this very rapid, exothermic reaction would create a toxic acidic mist in a spill of the chemical into water.

    Reactive Group:

    Anhydrides

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Water-Reactive

    Reactivity Profile:

PHOSPHORIC ANHYDRIDE reacts violently and exothermically with water. The heat can ignite surrounding or admixed combustible materials. Undergoes hazardous or violent reactions with metal hydroxides and oxides, formic acid, hydrogen fluoride and hydrofluoric acid, iodides, metals (in particular potassium and sodium), oxidizing agents (bromine pentafluoride, chlorine trifluoride, perchloric acid, oxygen difluoride, hydrogen peroxide), ammonia, and proparygl alcohol. [Bretherick, 5th ed., 1995, p. 1781; EPA, 1998]. A violent explosion occurs if a solution of perchloric acid in chloroform is poured over phosphorus pentaoxide [EPA, 1998].
