What is Tween 80 ?

Tween 80 is a synthetic non-ionic emulsifier, which is widely used in cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical preparations. The industrial manufacturing method is: the addition reaction of ethylene oxide with sorbitan fatty acid partial ester and sorbitan fatty acid partial ester under the catalysis of base, wherein every 1mol of sorbitan or corresponding sorbitan is added to 20mol of ethylene oxide. This kind of emulsifier was first developed by ICI Company in the United States, and Twain is the trade name given by ICI Company to this kind of emulsifier, and different numbers are given according to different types of fatty acids used in the synthesis process to form a complete trade name, such as Twain 60 and Twain 80. Due to its wide application and easy memory, Tween has become a common trade name for polysorbate in the industry. Properties: Commercial polysorbate has five kinds of polysorbate 20, polysorbate 40, polysorbate 60, polysorbate 65, polysorbate 80, commonly known as Twain 20, Twain 40, Twain 60, Twain Chemicalbook65, Twain 80. Twain is a light beige to light yellow paste or viscous oil-like liquid at room temperature. It has a characteristic greasy smell with a slight bitter taste. Tween has good thermal stability. Since the polyoxyethylene long chain forms a hydrophilic group, the hydrophilic group plays a dominant role in the specific gravity of the entire emulsifier molecule, so Twain has a high hydrophilic energy and HLB value, and belongs to the O/W type emulsifier. Its surface activity is not affected by the environmental pH, and at a very low concentration (0.05%), the interfacial tension of the soybean oil/water system can be greatly reduced. Tween itself is water-soluble, and it has a good solubilization effect on lipophilic substances that are difficult to dissolve in water, and can be used to prepare emulsified essence. It also has good aeration and stirring foaming effect in food. It has a good stabilizing effect on certain oil crystals.

Function and Application

1.This product is widely used in oil extraction and transportation, medicine, cosmetics, paint pigments, textiles, food, pesticides. It is used as emulsifier, dispersant, stabilizer, diffuser, lubricant, softener, antistatic agent, anti-rust agent, finishing agent, viscosity reducer and so on in the production of detergent and anti-rust cleaning of metal surface.
2.Used as emulsifier, wetting agent, penetrant, diffusion agent, etc., also used as a component of cotton fiber and viscose cord tensioning agent. Used as an emulsifier in the production of polyurethane foams. The food industry is used as an ice cream emulsifier, the amount is 0.1% butter, and the general oil is about 1%.
3.Used as solubilizer, diffuser, antistatic agent, stabilizer, lubricant, etc.

4.This product has excellent emulsification, dispersion, wetting and other properties. In the food industry, it is used as an emulsifier, dispersant and turbidity agent for ice cream, bread, pastry, candy and so on. The dosage is 0.1% ~ 0.5%, to prevent cream food spatter, food aging, and improve quality, increase luster, improve taste, improve softness. Especially for cream chocolate too Chemicalbook ffee has obvious anti-frosting effect. It can be used alone or with food emulsifiers such as glycerol ester and sucrose ester to play a synergistic effect.
