Description	What is Oxytocin? Oxytocin is a medication. As a medication, it is used to cause contraction of the uterus, which is used to start labor, increase the speed of labor, and to stop bleeding following delivery. It is used either into a muscle or into a vein. Medical uses can result in excessive contraction of the uterus that can cause distress in an unborn baby. Common side effects in the mother include nausea and a slow heart rate. Oxytocin is normally produced in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary gland. It plays a role in social bonding, sexual reproduction in both sexes, and during and after childbirth. It is released due to stretching of the cervix and uterus during labor and with stimulation of the nipples from breastfeeding. Metabolism: Oxytocin is rapidly removed from the plasma by the liver and kidney. The enzyme oxytocinase is largely responsible for the metabolism and regulation of oxytocin levels in pregnancy and only a small percentage of the neurohormone is excreted in the urine unchanged. Oxytocinase activity increases throughout pregnancy and peaks in the plasma, placenta and uterus near term. The placenta is a key source of oxytocinase during gestation and produces increasing amounts of the enzyme in response to increasing levels of oxytocin produced by the mother. Oxytocinase activity is also expressed in mammary glands, heart, kidney, and the small intestine. Lower levels of activity can be found in the brain, spleen, liver, skeletal muscle, testes, and colon. The level of oxytocin degradation is negligible in non-pregnant women, men, and cord blood.
