Streptomycin sulfate is the sulfate form of streptomycin, an antibiotic produced in soil by the actinomyces griseus. Streptomycin is the first chemotherapeutic drug that has a definite effect on tuberculosis. This product must be intramuscularly injected, so its long-term application is limited. Streptomycin is the most effective and least toxic antibiotic obtained from Streptomyces for extra-gastrointestinal application. This product is a bactericide, probably due to its direct effect on bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis, mainly acting on the extracellular (including the cavity) tuberculosis bacillus. Streptomycin sulfate has a strong antibacterial effect on tuberculosis bacilli, the antibacterial effect on most gram-chemicalbook-positive bacteria (such as various streptococcus) and bacteria (such as pseudomonas aeruginosa, anaerobic bacteria) is not strong, and the antibacterial effect on many gram-negative bacilli is strong, this product is effective on all kinds of skin tuberculosis. It can inhibit the proliferation of mycobacterium tuberculosis and the production of toxins, and has bactericidal effect at high concentrations (>0.4μg/mL). Mycobacterium tuberculosis develops resistance to streptomycin rapidly and should be combined with other anti-tuberculosis drugs. The combination of streptomycin sulfate and isoniazid, another highly effective bactericide approved for use in the gastrointestinal tract, has an immediate and significant effect on susceptible bacteria and, in critical cases, often brings back the dead.
