• Basic Information
  • Chemical Name: Disodium succinate; Butanedioic acid, disodium salt.
  • CAS Number: 150 - 90 - 3 (anhydrous); 6106 - 21 - 4 (hexahydrate).
  • Molecular Formula:  C4​H4​Na2​O4​  (anhydrous);  C4​H4​Na2​O4​⋅6H2​O  (hexahydrate).
  • Molecular Weight: 162.05 (anhydrous); 270.15 (hexahydrate).
• Physical and Chemical Properties
  • Appearance: Anhydrous form is a white crystalline powder; hexahydrate form is colorless transparent crystals.
  • Melting Point: Anhydrous form: decomposes at around 235 °C; hexahydrate form: loses water of crystallization at around 120 - 130 °C.
  • Solubility: Freely soluble in water. The solubility in water at 20 °C is about 70 g/100 mL for the he xahydrate. Insoluble in e thanol and e ther.
  • pH: Aqueous solutions are slightly alkaline. The pH of a 1% aqueous solution is about 8.5 - 9.5.
• Quality Specifications
  • Purity: Usually, the purity of disodium succinate is required to be ≥ 98.0% (anhydrous basis).
  • Heavy Metals: ≤ 10 ppm.
  • Arsenic: ≤ 2 ppm.
  • Loss on Drying: For the anhydrous form, the loss on drying is usually specified within a certain range, such as ≤ 1.0%. For the hexahydrate, the water content should be within the range corresponding to the hexahydrate composition.
  • Residue on Ignition: ≤ 0.1%.
• Uses
  • Food Industry: It is used as a flavor enhancer to improve the umami taste of food. It is often used in instant noodles, seasonings, canned foods, and so on.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry: It can be used as a buffering agent and excipient in pharmaceutical preparations.
  • Chemical Industry: It is used as a raw material for the synthesis of other organic compounds.
• Storage and Handling
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly closed to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Handling: When handling, it is recommended to wear gloves and a dust - proof mask to avoid direct contact with the powder and inhalation of dust. In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
