Dimethyl carbonate is widely used in various fields, mainly for the following purposes:

① Solvent: Used as a solvent in coatings, paints, cleaning agents, and inks, known for its low toxicity and low volatility.

② Fuel Additive: Serves as an oxygenate in gasoline to improve fuel combustion efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions.

③ Chemical Synthesis: Acts as a methylating and carbonylating agent in organic synthesis, used in the production of polycarbonate,                                  pharmaceuticals, and pesticides.

④ Battery Electrolyte: Used as a solvent in electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries, enhancing battery performance and safety.

Preparation :
       Dimethyl carbonate is prepared by transesterification of ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate with methanol. This method has high yield, low corrosion and mild reaction conditions, but the source of raw materials is restricted by the development of petrochemical industry and the utilization rate of elements is low.
      Dimethyl carbonate is synthesized directly from methanol, carbon monoxide and oxygen under the action of catalyst. This method is the most promising method with cheap raw materials, low toxicity and simple process. According to the classification of process conditions, it can be divided into liquid phase method and gas phase method, and gas phase method can be divided into one step method and two step method. Among them, the liquid phase oxidation carbonylation of methanol and the gas phase oxidation carbonylation two-step process has been industrialized, while the gas phase oxidation carbonylation of methanol is still under development.
