Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (molecular formula MgSO4·7H2O), also known as sulfur bitter, bitter salt, cathartic salt, Epsom salt, is a white or colorless needle or oblique columnar crystal, odorless, cool and slightly bitter, molecular weight: 246.47, specific gravity 1.68, easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerol, dissolved in its own crystalline water at 67.5℃. When decomposed by heat, 70, 80℃ is the crystal water that loses four molecules. The month 200℃ lost all the crystalline water into anhydrous matter. In the air (dry) easy to weather into powder, heating gradually remove the crystalline water into anhydrous magnesium sulfate, this product does not contain any toxic impurities.

Because magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is not easily dissolved, it is easier to weigh than anhydrous magnesium sulfate, which is convenient for quantitative control in industry. It is mainly used in the manufacture of fertilizer, leather, printing and dyeing, catalyst, papermaking, plastics, porcelain, pigments, matches, explosives and fireproof materials.
