Drug Function and Efficacy
Magnesium sulfate is a first-line medication for the treatment of eclampsia and prevention of seizures, and for preventing eclamptic seizures in severe preeclampsia. Magnesium ions inhibit central nervous system activity, block neuromuscular transmission by inhibiting acetylcholine release at motor nerve-muscle junctions, leading to muscle relaxation. It also has vasodilatory effects on vascular smooth muscle, reducing blood pressure, and inhibits uterine smooth muscle activity.
