Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is a naturally occurring, inert, white mineral compound widely used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food, and industrial applications. In medicine, it serves as a pigment (opacifier) in tablets, capsules, and coatings, as well as a key ingredient in sunscreens due to its UV-blocking properties. It is chemically stable, non-toxic, and insoluble in water, making it suitable for topical and oral formulations.

Mechanism of Action

In sunscreens : Acts as a  physical UV filter , reflecting and scattering UVA/UVB radiation to protect the skin.

In oral pharmaceuticals : Functions as an  opacifying agent  to improve tablet appearance and light stability.

As a photocatalyst  (nano-TiO₂): Under UV light, it can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for antimicrobial or self-cleaning surfaces (industrial use).
Note: Nano-sized TiO₂ in sunscreens is coated to minimize ROS generation on skin.

Dosage and Administration

Topical (sunscreens) : Apply liberally (typically 5–25% concentration) 15–30 minutes before sun exposure; reapply every 2 hours.

Oral (tablet/capsule coatings) : Not systemically absorbed; no specific dosage required.

Avoid inhalation  (powder form) to prevent respiratory irritation.
