Description	Xanthohumol is under basic research for its potential chemopreventive and anti-restenotic properties. Xanthohumol shows anti mutagenic activity against mutations induced by the food borne mutagen 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ). The mechanism is possibly related to the inhibition of the metabolic activation of IQ by human cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) and the binding of IQ metabolites to DNA and proteins.

Xanthohumol (XN) is a prenylated chalcone (a type of polyphenol) naturally occurring in the female inflorescences of hops (Humulus lupulus L.) and in beer . It is biosynthesized through a type III polyketide synthase (PKS) pathway and modified by enzymes such as prenyltransferases and O-methyltransferases . XN is the most abundant prenylated flavonoid in hops (up to ~1% of hop-cone dry weight, depending on variety) but has no direct brewing value, as it does not affect beer flavor . However, XN exhibits significant health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anticarcinogenic properties (e.g., against breast and prostate cancer) . It inhibits procarcinogen activation, induces carcinogen-detoxifying enzymes, and inhibits tumor growth . Additionally, XN has cytotoxic and anti-angiogenic effects in cancer research and may exert hepatoprotective effects by inhibiting hepatic stellate cell activation and fibrosis progression .

Regarding bioavailability, XN is present at low concentrations in beer (typically 0–700 ppb, depending on hop usage) due to rapid isomerization during brewing, but higher levels of its isomerized form, isoxanthohumol, can be found . Challenges such as low aqueous solubility and short half-life have prompted research into improved drug delivery systems (e.g., nanoparticles) to enhance XN's bioavailability.
