Citric acid reacts with aqueous sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate to produce a large amount of CO2 (i.e., effervescent) and sodium citrate, which rapidly dissolves the active ingredient in the medication and enhances the taste sensation. For example, it gives solubilizing effect to laxatives and analgesics. Citric acid syrup is a refreshing drink for febrile patients with corrective taste, cooling and detoxifying properties. Citric acid is commonly used in a variety of nutritional oral solution, etc., to buffer pH 3.5 to 4.5, maintain the stability of active ingredients, and enhance the effect of preservatives. Citric acid is used in combination with fruit flavors to give people a favorite tangy and sour taste to cover up the bitter taste of drugs, especially Chinese medicine preparations, adding 0.02% citric acid to liquid ingredients can form trace iron and copper complexes, delaying the degradation of the active ingredients. The use of 0.1% to 0.2% citric acid in chewable tablets improves the flavor of the tablets, giving them a lemon flavor.
