Description

Rapamycin (RAPA) is a new type of macrolide immunosuppressant. It is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 183-185°C, lipophilic, soluble in organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, and chloroform, very slightly soluble in water, and almost insoluble in ether. It was developed as early as the 1970s, initially used as a low-toxicity antifungal drug. In 1977, it was found to have immunosuppressive effects, and in 1989, RAPA began to be trialed as a new drug for the treatment of organ transplant rejection. Animal experiments and clinical applications have shown that it is an effective, low-toxicity, non-nephrotoxic immunosuppressant. It is now commonly used as a maintenance drug to preserve the immune function of transplanted organs (especially kidney transplants) to mitigate immune rejection after organ transplantation. However, scientists have recently discovered another use: it can be used to treat Alzheimer’s disease (senile dementia). What has piqued their interest is that the main component of rapamycin is also found in bacterial products from the isolated soils of Easter Island. Recent experiments have shown that administering this substance to experimental mice can restore memory deficits.
