Propylene Glycol Methyl Ether Acetate, also known as PGMEA, PMA, or Propylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Acetate, is a colorless, high-grade solvent with a distinctive odor. The PMA molecule contains both an ether bond and a carbonyl group, with the carbonyl group forming an ester structure while also possessing an alkyl group. The coexistence of polar and nonpolar functional groups within the same molecule confers solubilizing capabilities for both polar and nonpolar substances. As a low-toxicity, high-grade industrial solvent, propylene glycol methyl ether acetate is currently applied in ink, coatings, textile dyes, and paint industries, where it has achieved significant development.

In recent years, China's propylene glycol methyl ether acetate industry has experienced rapid capacity expansion, reaching 400,000 tons and establishing the country as the world's largest producer, accounting for approximately 36% of global output. Production capacity is primarily concentrated in East China and South China, with East China holding a significant share. Propylene glycol methyl ether acetate is categorized into electronic-grade and industrial-grade products. While industrial-grade products are currently well-established, electronic-grade products still present substantial growth opportunities. Electronic-grade MPMAA boasts higher purity, though most products on the market currently fall below 99% purity. This grade finds application in photoresists, where its content exceeds 80%. Currently, the domestic production rate of photoresists in China remains low. As domestic substitution for LCD photoresists and semiconductor photoresists advances in the future, demand for propylene glycol methyl ether acetate will continue to rise.

PMA serves as a solvent for cellulose, polymers, rubber, and natural macromolecules. In the coatings industry, PMA is widely used as a solvent in nearly all fiber and resin varnishes and emulsion paints. In the leather industry, PMA serves as a solvent for softening agents, enhancing leather flexibility and maintaining excellent gloss. Within the printing sector, PMA functions as an excellent solvent for printing inks. Additionally, PMA is a critical process chemical in the manufacturing of liquid crystals and semiconductors. Solutions blending PM and PMA in specific ratios are extensively used as cleaning agents across industries. PMA also constitutes a key component of photoresists.
