Butyl acetate is a synthetic fragrance belonging to the carboxylic acid ester class, also known as butyl ethanoate. It is a colorless, transparent liquid with an intense fruity aroma. It is miscible with ethanol and diethyl ether in any proportion, soluble in most organic solvents, slightly soluble in water, with a water solubility of 0.05g. Its vapor has a mild anesthetic effect, with an air concentration limit of 0.2g/l. This compound possesses a strong fruity aroma. When diluted, it exhibits a pleasant pineapple- or banana-like scent, though its persistence is extremely poor. It occurs naturally in many vegetables, fruits, and berries. Butyl acetate is less commonly used in cosmetic fragrances and is primarily employed in food flavor formulations. Butyl acetate comprises four isomers: n-butyl acetate, isobutyl acetate, sec-butyl acetate, and tert-butyl acetate, all occurring naturally. The most significant are n-butyl acetate and isobutyl acetate. N-Butyl acetate is a colorless, transparent liquid. It possesses a fruity aroma, with a sensation that is initially sharp and then sweet. It is highly volatile and flammable. Naturally occurring in apples, bananas, cherries, grapes, peaches, plums, pears, tomatoes, and cocoa beans.

Butyl acetate has a relative molecular mass of 111.16. Its relative density is 0.8825. Melting point: -77.9°C. Boiling point: 126.5°C. Flash point: 22°C (closed cup), 38°C. Refractive index: 1.3951. Viscosity: 0.732 mPa·s (20°C). Vapor pressure: 1.160 × 10³ Pa (Chemicalbook, 20°C). Spontaneously ignites in air at 450°C. Slightly soluble in water (0.5 g soluble in 100 mL water at 25°C), soluble in most common organic solvents, miscible with ethanol and diethyl ether. Forms an azeotropic mixture with water at 92.0°C, with a product content of 71.3% at this point. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air.
