Ethylene Glycol Distearate

Ethylene Glycol Distearate (EGDS) is an organic compound that appears as a colorless to pale yellow, waxy solid. It is non-toxic and combustible. It is insoluble in water but soluble in solvents such as acetone, benzene, and chloroform. When heated within a surfactant blend, it dissolves or emulsifies; upon cooling, it precipitates in the form of lamellar crystals, thereby imparting a pearlescent luster. It also serves additional functions, including conditioning, thickening, and providing anti-static properties. It is synthesized by heating to its melting point, followed by the addition of ethylene glycol and  to facilitate an esterification reaction. It is utilized in cosmetics as a pearlescent agent and thickener—for instance, in shampoos and body washes—and also serves as a viscosity reducer in the hot-melt processing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Used in the formulation of shampoos, body washes, skin lotions, and high-end liquid detergents. It also finds application in pharmaceutical manufacturing as a pearlescent dispersant, solubilizer, and lubricant, as well as in metal surface processing detergents and the field of textile processing. When employed in cold-mix formulations, the pearlescent flakes must first be pre-dispersed to form a pearlescent slurry.
