1. Physical Properties
At room temperature, it is a colorless, transparent liquid that is miscible with water, ethanol, diethyl ether, and glycerol, and partially soluble in hydrocarbons.
2. Chemical Properties
The formic acid molecule contains both a carboxyl group and an aldehyde group, exhibiting the chemical properties of both carboxylic acids and aldehydes:
(1) Acidity and Corrosiveness: It is the most acidic monocarboxylic saturated carboxylic acid, with a pKa of 3.75; its acidity is stronger than that of acetic acid and carbonic acid. It can corrode most metals and reacts with metals or metal oxides to form soluble formates.
(2) Reducing Properties: Due to the presence of an aldehyde group, it exhibits reducing properties; it undergoes the silver mirror reaction, can reduce freshly prepared copper(II) hydroxide, is easily oxidized to carbon dioxide and water, and can be used as a reducing agent.
(3) General Properties of Carboxylic Acids: It undergoes esterification with alcohols to form formates, neutralizes with bases to form formates, and undergoes dehydration to decompose into carbon monoxide and water (under conditions of heating catalyzed by concentrated sulfuric acid). It can also undergo amidation to form formamide products.
(4) Stability: Chemically stable at room temperature; must be stored separately from strong oxidizing agents and strong bases.
3. Main Applications
(1)‌Agriculture and Livestock: Used as a preservative in silage to extend its shelf life; at low concentrations, it serves as a food acidulant and a sterilant for canned foods.
(2)‌Industrial Applications: Used in leather tanning, as a rubber antioxidant, and as a coagulant for natural rubber; In the electroplating industry, it serves as an additive in electroplating solutions to improve coating quality; in the dyeing industry, it acts as a dyeing aid for reactive dyes, replacing sulfuric acid to reduce fiber degradation and enhance dye utilization.
(3) Organic Synthesis: Used in the production of chemical raw materials such as sodium formate, calcium formate, ethyl formate, and dimethylformamide; it can also be used to synthesize intermediates for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other products.
(4) Emerging Energy Sector: Formic acid can be used in formic acid fuel cells to power small portable devices.
(5) Cleaning Applications: It can be used for descaling and cleaning stainless steel equipment and is widely used for chemical cleaning of industrial pipelines and heat exchangers.
