LL-37 is the only Cathelicidin-type antimicrobial peptide identified in humans, composed of 37 amino acids cleaved from the N-terminal region of the Cathelicidin precursor protein. It is named LL-37 as its first two amino acid residues are both leucine (Leu, L).

LL-37 is the predominant protein stored in neutrophils, and is widely distributed in neutrophils, bone marrow, cervical epithelial cells, vaginal squamous epithelial cells and other cell types. Its precursor consists of a signal peptide, a conserved cathelin domain and a 37-amino-acid fragment. Upon cellular activation, proteolytic cleavage mediated by serine protease 3 and other proteases generates bioactive mature LL-37. This peptide exhibits antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activities, together with chemotactic and immunomodulatory effects.il
