Brief Introduction Tryptamine is a monoamine alkaloid found in plants, animals and fungi, with an indole core structure. It has a similar structure to tryptophan without one carboxyl group, thus getting its name. It exists in trace amounts in mammalian brains and is considered to act as a neuromodulator and neurotransmitter. Tryptamines refer to a class of compounds with tryptamine as the parent skeleton, including many bioactive substances such as neurotransmitters.
