    1. Physical Properties
A colorless, transparent liquid with a fruity, ether-like odor and a slightly irritating smell. It is practically insoluble in water but miscible in all proportions with organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone.
    2. Chemical Properties
Stable; does not readily react at room temperature, but is prone to forming explosive peroxides when exposed to light or during prolonged storage.
It is an inert solvent that does not react with most common organic reagents; decomposition and oxidation occur only under strongly acidic or strongly oxidative conditions.
    3. Main Uses
    (1) Industrially, it serves as an excellent solvent for fats, oils, resins, and rubber, and can also be used as an electronic-grade cleaning agent.
    (2) It acts as an inert reaction medium in organic synthesis reactions involving Grignard reagents, pesticides, and rubber.
    (3) It can be used for the separation of rare earth elements and the extraction and purification of alkaloids and hormones, and can also serve as a fuel additive.

    Air and Water Reactions:

Highly flammable. Oxidizes readily in air to form unstable peroxides that may explode spontaneously [Bretherick 1979 p.151-154, 164]. A mixture of liquid air and diethyl ether exploded spontaneously [MCA Case History 616 1960]. Insoluble in water.

    Reactive Group:

    Ethers

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Highly Flammable

    Reactivity Profile:

Ethers, such as BUTYL ETHER can act as bases. They form salts with strong acids and addition complexes with Lewis acids. The complex between diethyl ether and boron trifluoride is an example. Ethers may react violently with strong oxidizing agents. In other reactions, which typically involve the breaking of the carbon-oxygen bond, ethers are relatively inert.
