Product Overview

γ-Alumina (gamma-alumina) is a transition alumina phase with high surface area and porous structure, widely used as an adsorbent, catalyst support, and chromatographic media. This white to off-white powder or spherical granules is a metastable form of aluminum oxide that exhibits excellent thermal stability and surface activity. The material is characterized by a high specific surface area (typically 150-300 m²/g), controlled pore size distribution, and high purity. γ-Alumina is extensively used in column chromatography for the purification of organic compounds, as a catalyst support in petrochemical and chemical industries, and as a desiccant for gas and liquid drying applications.

Synthetic Process

γ-Alumina is manufactured through the following routes:

• Calcination of aluminum hydroxide: High-purity aluminum hydroxide is calcined at controlled temperatures (400-600°C) to convert to γ-alumina with the desired surface area and porosity.

• Activation: The calcined product is activated by controlled heating to remove adsorbed moisture and achieve the appropriate surface activity.

• Classification: The material is classified to obtain the desired particle size distribution for specific applications.

Mechanism of Action / Application Principles

• Adsorption Chromatography: The polar surface of γ-alumina interacts with compounds through hydrogen bonding and dipole interactions.

• Catalyst Support: Provides a high-surface-area substrate for the dispersion of catalytic metals.

• Drying Agent: The porous structure adsorbs water and other polar molecules from gases and liquids.
