Coenzyme Q10 is a small-molecule, fat-soluble quinone organic compound widely present in animal and plant cells. Its structure resembles that of vitamin K. Used alone or in combination with vitamin E, it acts as a potent antioxidant. It is essential for driving the human body's energy production (ATP) cycle. It promotes oxidative phosphorylation reactions and protects the integrity of biological membrane structures. Coenzyme Q from different sources varies in the number of isoprene units in its side chain. Humans and mammals possess 10 isoprene units, hence the designation Coenzyme Q10.
