Product Overview

D-Gluconic acid δ-lactone (CAS 90-80-2), also known as gluconolactone, is a cyclic ester of gluconic acid with the molecular formula C₆H₁₀O₆ and a molecular weight of 178.14 g/mol. It is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and alcohol. Gluconolactone is widely used as a food additive, a chelating agent, and in the preparation of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It is also used as an acidulant in food processing.

Synthetic Process

D-Gluconic acid δ-lactone is typically produced by the oxidation of glucose followed by lactonization under controlled conditions, or by dehydration of gluconic acid.

Mechanism of Action

The lactone ring can hydrolyze to gluconic acid, which acts as a mild acid and chelating agent.
