    🧪 Chemical Characteristics & Production

    Core Characteristics: Acrylic acid is the simplest unsaturated carboxylic acid and is chemically active. The double bond in its molecule makes it highly prone to polymerization. Therefore, a polymerization inhibitor (such as 200 ppm of MEHQ) is typically added to commercial products to ensure safe storage and transportation.

    Main Production Method: Industrially, acrylic acid is produced almost exclusively via the propylene oxidation method – the catalytic oxidation of propylene (a byproduct of petroleum refining) in two steps. In addition, research is also being conducted on bio-fermentation processes using renewable resources as a potential alternative route for the future.

    Acrylic acid is an important monomer for the production of various polymers, with a wide range of applications.

    Core Applications:

    • Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP): Used as the core material in personal care products such as diapers and sanitary napkins.

    • Coatings & Paints: Widely used in water-based coatings, architectural paints, automotive paints, etc., providing adhesion, weatherability, and gloss.

    • Adhesives: Used in the production of pressure-sensitive adhesives, construction adhesives, packaging adhesives, etc.

    Other Applications: Also used in the production of textile auxiliaries, leather treatment agents, plastic additives, water treatment agents, detergents, and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA / acrylic glass), among others.


    ⚠️ Safety & Storage

    Hazards: Acrylic acid is corrosive and moderately toxic, with severe irritating effects on skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract. Its vapors can form explosive mixtures with air.

    Storage Conditions: Must be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area in sealed containers, and a polymerization inhibitor must be strictly added. Containers are typically lined with polyethylene or made of stainless steel; moisture ingress must be prevented to avoid rust formation, which can trigger polymerization.

    Operational Protective Measures: Operators should wear protective goggles, gloves, and work clothing, and operate in a well-ventilated environment.
