Potassium selenocyanate is an inorganic compound. It appears as colorless, highly deliquescent acicular crystals.

Chemical Properties

Soluble in water, dimethylformamide, ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, hexamethylphosphoramide, acetonitrile and methanol; slightly soluble in tetrahydrofuran.

Synthesis Methods

1. It can be obtained by co‑melting selenium with pure potassium cyanide. The reaction can also take place in hot water or ethanol medium. Reaction equation: \(\ce{Se + KCN -> KSeCN}\)

Note: Selenocyanate ion may react with alcohol to produce alkyl selenocyanate substances.

1. Potassium selenocyanate can also be synthesized by co‑melting selenium and potassium ferrocyanide. \(\ce{K4[Fe(CN)6] + 4Se ->[fusion] 4KSeCN + FeC2 + N2 ^}\)

Application

Used for the preparation of mercury‑thiocyanate and selenocyanate compounds, which serve as potential model materials for solid‑state NMR research of heavy‑metal nuclei.
