1. Physical Properties
At room temperature, it is a colorless, transparent liquid with a pungent, irritating odor and is highly volatile. It is slightly soluble in water, miscible with ethanol and diethyl ether in any proportion, and soluble in most organic solvents, such as chloroform.
2. Chemical Properties
Polymerization Properties: The carbon-carbon double bonds in the molecule are highly reactive. At room temperature, the compound is highly prone to self-polymerization when exposed to light, heat, or contact with peroxides. It can also undergo copolymerization with various monomers such as ethylene, vinyl acetate, and styrene. Commercial products typically contain MEHQ as a polymerization inhibitor to enhance storage stability.
Reactivity: As a typical lower ester, it hydrolyzes under acidic conditions to form acrylic acid and ethanol, and under alkaline conditions to form acrylic acid salts and ethanol; the double bonds can undergo addition reactions, and upon complete combustion, it produces carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
‌Compatibility Properties‌: It is a highly flammable hazardous chemical that reacts violently upon contact with oxidizing agents, strong acids, strong bases, and polymerization initiators, posing a risk of fire and explosion.
3. Major Industrial Applications
‌Polymer Copolymer Monomer‌: Serves as a core raw material for synthesizing various acrylic ester copolymers. Downstream products are widely used in coatings, adhesives, textile auxiliaries, leather treatment agents, paper impregnating agents, and other fields, significantly enhancing material flexibility and bond strength.
‌Specialty Material Synthesis‌: EEA material, produced by copolymerization with ethylene, exhibits far superior low-temperature impact resistance and stress crack resistance compared to ordinary polyethylene. It can be used in applications such as high-end cable shielding materials, anti-static packaging for semiconductors, and hot-melt adhesives. Copolymerization with chloroethyl vinyl ether yields specialty synthetic rubbers that are oil- and heat-resistant, which can replace nitrile rubber in certain applications.
‌Fine Chemicals Sector‌: It serves as an organic synthetic intermediate for the production of the carbamate insecticide propylthiocarbamate.
