2-Bromo-1-fluoro-4-(methoxymethyl)benzene

To a solution of (3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)methanol (5.00 g, 24.4 mmol) in N, N-anhydrous N, N-dimethylformamide (50 mL) was added a 60percent suspension of sodium hydride in mineral oil (1.37 g, 34.2 mmol) in portions at 0° C., and the mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 30 minutes. To it was then added iodomethane (4.15 g, 29.3 mmol) at 0° C. The mixture was allowed to warm to ambient temperature and stirred for 1 h. The reaction was quenched by addition of water (200 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×200 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (50 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and filtered. Concentration of the filtrate in vacuo and purification of the residue by column chromatography, eluting with 2 to 5percent of ethyl acetate in petroleum ether, afforded the title compound as a colorless oil (4.50 g, 84percent yield):
