Description
Glutaraldehyde is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor, which readily changes to a glossy polymer. The Odor Threshold is 0.04 ppm (NY) and 0.2 ppm (NJ). It is miscible in water and organic solvents. Glutaraldehyde may be incompatible with strong oxidizers and strong bases. It should be noted that alkaline solutions containing glutaraldehyde may react with alcohol, ketones, amines, hydrazines, and proteins.

Drug Function and Efficacy
Glutaraldehyde was originally used as a fixative for pathological specimens. It has the strongest effect when the pH value is 7.5-8.5. It can kill bacterial propagules and spores, fungi, and viruses. Its effect is 2-10 times that of formaldehyde. The mechanism of glutaraldehyde killing microorganisms is that the free aldehyde group combines with the amino group of the cell surface or internal protein or enzyme to cause a series of reactions, leading to the death of the microorganism.
