This chemical is a combustible liquid. Poisonous gases including nitrogen oxides are produced in fire. Use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or alcohol foam extinguishers. Vapors are heavier than air and will collect in low areas. Vapors may travel long distances to ignition sources and flashback. Vapors in confined areas may explode when exposed to fire. Containers may explode in fire. Storage containers and parts of containers may rocket great distances, in many directions. If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream users of potentially contaminated waters. Notify local health and fire officials and pollution control agencies. Containers may explode in fire. From a secure, explosion-proof location, use water spray to cool exposed containers. If cooling streams are ineffective (venting sound increases in volume and pitch, tank discolors, or shows any signs of deforming), withdraw immediately to a secure position. Vapor-phase tert-butylamine is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 33 hours(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 1.18X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(3). tert-Butylamine does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(4) and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).

The rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of tert-butylamine with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals has been measured as 1.18X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(1). This corresponds to an atmospheric half-life of about 33 hours at an atmospheric concentration of 5X10+5 hydroxyl radicals per cu cm(SRC). tert-Butylamine is not expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment due to the lack of functional groups that hydrolyze under environmental conditions(2). tert-Butylamine does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(2) and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).

An estimated BCF of 3 was calculated in fish for tert-butylamine(SRC), using a log Kow of 0.40(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).

Inhalation causes irritation of nose, mouth, and lungs. Ingestion causes irritation of mouth and stomach. Contact with liquid causes severe irritation of eyes and moderate irritation of skin. (USCG, 1999)

EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after washing the affected areas. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. tert-butylamine

tert-Butylamine Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Tert-butylamine is obtained by condensation and hydrolysis of tert-butyl alcohol. (1) Condensation of tert-butyl alcohol and urea to obtain tert-butylurea. (CH3)3COH[NH2CONH2]→(CH3)3-NHCONH2 Add sulfuric acid into the dry reaction pot, stir and cool, slowly add urea at 15~25℃, keep it at 20~25℃ and then add tert-butanol. Stir for 0.5h and let stand overnight. Put the reactant into ice water, add 20% sodium hydroxide solution to neutralize to pH=3~4, cool to 15~17℃, filter, wash with ice water, add water to boil the filter cake to dissolve, filter while hot, and cool the filtrate to Crystals precipitated at 0~5℃, filtered and dried to obtain tert-butylurea. (2) Hydrolysis (CH3)3C-NHCONH2[NaOH]→[H2O](CH3)3C-NH2 Add sodium hydroxide solution, tert-butylurea, and ethylene glycol to the reaction pot, and heat to reflux for 4h. The reactants are distilled, and the 40-90°C fractions are collected to obtain crude tert-butylamine. Add a small amount of solid sodium hydroxide to dry overnight, distill it roughly, and collect the 43-52°C distillate to obtain refined tert-butylamine. The American Rohm and Haas Company uses isobutylene as raw material, reacts with hydrocyanic acid and neutralizes the product with ammonia.

Uses

Organic synthetic raw materials, used to synthesize medicines, rubber vulcanization accelerators, insecticides, fungicides and dye colorants, and can also be used as solvents. It can be used to produce rifampicin, N-tert-butyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide, tert-butylaminoethanol methacrylate, etc. The production and consumption of N-tert-butyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide (accelerator NS) in the United States is large, accounting for 40% of the total thiazole vulcanization chemicals (including vulcanization agents and vulcanization accelerators) %, the accelerator NS is prepared by the oxidative condensation of the accelerator M or DM with tert-butylamine. Since the domestic production of tert-butylamine has not formed a scale, it has affected the industrial production of secondary agent NS.
