Toxicity

IDENTIFICATION AND USE: Chromium (III) acetate is a blue-violet crystalline powder. It is not registered for current pesticide use in the U.S., but approved pesticide uses may change periodically and so federal, state and local authorities must be consulted for currently approved uses. It is used in dyeing; in tanning; in hardening photographic emulsions; as oxidation catalyst; to improve light stability and dye affinity of textiles and polymers; and in catalyst for polymerization of olefins. HUMAN EXPOSURE AND TOXICITY: There is no data. ANIMAL STUDIES: In studies in which chromium (III) acetate was administered by the oral route to mice and rats and by intrapleural and intramuscular administration to rats, the incidence of tumors was not increased. Salmonella typhimurium strain TA102, particularly suited to the detection of oxidative mutagens, was the most sensitive out of 9 strains of S. typhimurium his- in revealing the mutagenicity of Cr(VI) compounds. The rank of sensitivity was the following: TA102, TA100, TA97, TA92, TA1978, TA98, TA1538 and TA1537, TA1535 being the only insensitive strain. Cr(III) compounds (chromic acetate, chromic nitrate and chromic potassium sulfate) were totally inactive with all strains.

Using OECD Guideline 121 (Estimation of the Adsorption Coefficient (Koc) on Soil and on Sewage Sludge using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)), chromium (III) acetate was estimated to have a log Koc of <1.5 (Koc of 31.6)(1). According to a classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that chromium (III) acetate is expected to have very high mobility in soil.|Chromium (VI) anions can be considered to be mobile in sediments in the environment, except possibly under highly acidic conditions(1). In contrast chromium (III), the oxidation state in which chromium is present in acetic acid, chromium salt, appears to be much more strongly adsorbed to soils and sediments than chromium (VI)(1). The adsorption of chromium (III) onto soil follows the pattern typical of cationic metals and increases with increasing pH (lowering pH results in increased protonation of the adsorbent leading to fewer adsorption sites for the cationic metal) and the organic matter content of the soil and decreases when other competing (metal) cations are present(1). Certain dissolved organic ligands may also reduce the adsorption of chromium (III) to the solid phase by forming complexes which enhance the solubility of chromium (III) in the aqueous phase(1).

According to the 2012 TSCA Inventory Update Reporting data, 2 reporting facilities estimate the number of persons reasonably likely to be exposed during the manufacturing, processing, or use of Acetic acid, chromium(3+) salt (3:1) (1066-30-4) may be as low as <10 workers up to the range of 25-49 workers per plant; the data may be greatly underestimated due to confidential business information (CBI) or unknown values(1).

Drug Information

The commercial material, usually sold a a concentrated solution of the basic acetate, Cr(OH)(C2H3O2)2, contains Na acetate or Na2SO4 impurities.

INHALATION: Irritating. It can produce ulcerations in the respiratory system, perforation of the nasal septum, pneumonitis and bronchial carcinoma. EYES: Irritation. SKIN: May cause dermatitis to exposed skin. Can produce ulcerations and sensitizing reactions. (USCG, 1999)

/SRP:/ Immediate first aid: Ensure that adequate decontamination has been carried out. If patient is not breathing, start artificial respiration, preferably with a demand-valve resuscitator, bag-valve-mask device, or pocket mask, as trained. Perform CPR as necessary. Immediately flush contaminated eyes with gently flowing water. Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position, if possible) to maintain an open airway and prevent aspiration. Keep patient quiet and maintain normal body temperature. Obtain medical attention. /Inorganic acids and related compounds/|/SRP:/ Basic treatment: Establish a patent airway (oropharyngeal or nasopharyngeal airway, if needed). Suction if necessary. Watch for signs of respiratory insufficiency and assist respirations if needed. Administer oxygen by nonrebreather mask at 10 to 15 L/min. Monitor for pulmonary edema and treat if necessary ... . Monitor for shock and treat if necessary ... . For eye contamination, flush eyes immediately with water. Irrigate each eye continuously with 0.9% saline (NS) during transport ... . Do not use emetics. Activated charcoal is not effective. For ingestion, rinse mouth and administer 5 mL/kg up to 200 mL of water for dilution if the patient can swallow, has a strong gag reflex, and does not drool ... . Do not attempt to neutralize because of exothermic reaction. Early intubation, at the first sign of upper airway obstruction, may be necessary. Positive-pressure ventilation techniques with a bag valve mask device may be beneficial. Consider drug therapy for pulmonary edema ... . Consider administering a beta agonist such as albuterol for severe bronchospasm ... . Monitor cardiac rhythm and treat arrhythmias as necessary ... . Delays in the onset of pulmonary edema of up to 72 hours have been reported after inhalation of concentrated solutions of chromic acid. 2. Ingestion. a. Diluted immediately with water. treat hemorrhagic gastroenteritis with aggressive fluid and blood replacement. Consider early endoscopy to assess the extent of esophageal or gastric injury. b. Treat hemoglobinuria resulting from hemolysis with alkaline diuresis as far rhabdomyolysis.
