Description
Sodium methylenebis(naphthalenesulfonate), also known as disodium methylenebisnaphthalenesulphonate, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C₂₁H₁₄Na₂O₆S₂ and a molecular weight of 472.44 g/mol. It typically appears as a light yellow powder that is easily soluble in water, forming stable aqueous solutions. The compound is characterized by two naphthalene sulfonate groups linked by a methylene bridge, which imparts its anionic surfactant properties.
Sodium methylenebis(naphthalenesulfonate) Use and Manufacturing
The preparation of this product includes three major steps: refined naphthalene sulfonation, 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid and formaldehyde condensation, and condensation product neutralization. Preparation of naphthalenesulfonic acid Put naphthalene and 98% sulfuric acid into the reactor, and the molar ratio of naphthalene to sulfuric acid is 1:1. Raise the temperature to 160～180℃, react for 4h, cool to crystallize, and filter to obtain the finished product (I). Preparation of 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde Put (I) into a condensation kettle, add excess formaldehyde, and condense at 196kPa pressure to obtain crude 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid formaldehyde (II). Neutralization Put (II) into the neutralization kettle and add alkali to neutralize to pH 8-10, cool to crystallize, filter out the inorganic salt solution, and dry the solid to obtain sodium methylene dinaphthalene sulfonate.
Used as stabilizer for rubber industry latex, dye diffusion agent and leveling agent. It is also used as a water-reducing agent and reinforcing agent for concrete, pesticide dispersant, and tanning agent for leather industry.
