2. Desiccants
Ammonium sulfate is a desiccant which means it absorbs moisture from moist air. This makes it useful for drying and preserving food which is why it's used in the packaging industry. It can also be used to dehumidify a room where it will absorb moisture from the air and prevent condensation on cold surfaces when used in humidifiers or cooling towers. The desiccant properties of ammonium sulfate also make it useful to separate solids from suspensions.
3. Ion exchanger
Ammonium sulfate is used as an ion exchanger in the process of deionization water softening. In this process, hard water is treated with an ion exchange process. The ions of calcium, magnesium and other divalent cations are exchanged for negatively charged ions, so that the water becomes soft.
4. Sanitizers
Ammonium sulfate is used in food sanitizers as a bactericidal agent, fungicidal agent and a sterilant. It's used as a fortifier in bread and other baked goods, soft drinks, frozen dairy products, gelatin desserts and puddings. It's also used for dehydrating cakes or fruits due to its high water content making it suitable for this application. It is commonly found in catsup.
6. Detergents
Ammonium sulfate is used as a surfactant in many types of detergents and cleaners. It is also used as a water softener when it's added to fabric softening detergent. When ammonium sulfate dissolves it releases ions which bind to dyes or other stains on the material surface, improving their ability to be washed away by surfactants.
7. Pesticides
Ammonium sulfate is used as a pesticide, herbicide and fungicide. It's used to control weeds in agricultural practices, straw, wheat straw and rice straw. It's also used as a pesticide in animal feed, chicken wire, cotton bags to protect it from insects or mites.
8. Photographic chemicals
Ammonium sulfate is used as a developing agent or developer in photography to develop the photographic emulsion on film or paper during the wet chemical process of development. During this process it changes the silver halide crystals into metallic silver creating photographs by exposing them to light.
