(Tianhua), a subsidiary of Sinochem,designed and manufactured the first Rumus process polypropylene polymerizationreactor in the 300,000 tons/year polypropylene project of CNOOC Ningbo DaxiePetrochemical Co. As the core equipment of the project, the plant is runningsmoothly, the material and design standards meet the relevant regulations, andthe key parameters meet the design requirements. The successful commissioningof this plant fills the gap of polypropylene reaction equipment design andmanufacture in China.

 

The first set / set of core equipment:Rumus process polypropylene polymerization reactor

 

The Novolen process is one of the mostlicensed polypropylene technologies in the world in recent years, featuring lowoperating costs, high reliability and the widest portfolio of products. Theprocess can produce about 60 types of polypropylene resins for differentcategories and applications, with 90-99% product isometry, high crystallinity,good melting point, tensile strength, bending modulus, impact strength, etc.;tensile modulus up to 2400 MPa, maximum rubber content up to 50%, high materialrigidity, more solid and tough; melt mass flow rate range of 0.3-100 g/10 min.High reliability and guaranteed quality. At the same time, the impact copolymerpart of the product produced by this process has no swelling or dissolutionproblems and has a good quality.

 

These product advantages are mainly due tothe core equipment of the Rums process - the polymerization reactor.

 

Two reactors are typically configured inthe complete Rumors process, with the flexibility to adjust their arrangementin series or parallel depending on production requirements. A single reactorcan produce homopolymer polypropylene, random copolymer polypropylene andterpolymer polypropylene products; two reactors in series can produce impactcopolymer polypropylene products; when two reactors are used in parallel, theproduction capacity of homopolymers can be increased by 70% to 100%.

 

In practical applications: homopolymers aremainly used in containers, fibers, molds, automobiles, etc.; random copolymerscan be used in film, blow molding and injection molding, etc., which requirehigh transparency; terpolymers can be widely used in food packaging of cookingbags, composite films, meltblown cloth, etc. Therefore, the performance of thepolymerization reactor will directly affect the merits of the final product.

However, it was not an easy task tocomplete the design and manufacture of the polypropylene polymerization reactorfor the Rumus process on its own.

 

According to the process requirements, thepolymerization reactor has a large size, and the thickness of the head is 130mm. Due to the characteristics of the polymerization reaction, the designpressure reached 4.0 MPa, and the gap between the bottom stirrer and the vesselwas required to be about 2 mm during operation, making the design difficult andthe processing requirements high.
