What is ammoniacal brine solution formula? Ammoniacal brine solution is a chemical solution that is also known as NH3·H2O. The ammoniacal brine solution is used in the purpose of water-treatment and it removes sulfides from the water. The ammoniacal brine solution is an oxidant that kills bacteria and other microorganisms. It also removes sulfur compounds, hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, nitrous acid, nitric acid and phenols from the water. Ammoniacal brine can be manufactured by adding urea to saltwater or by boiling ammonia in water.
Uses of ammoniacal brine solution
Below are some of the uses of ammoniacal brine solution formula:
1. Removal of hydrogen sulfide gas
Ammoniacal brine solutions are used in the purpose of removing hydrogen sulfide gas. The removal is done through oxidizing the gas to form harmless sulfate. The oxidation process is done inorganic chloride, which is added to the water. oxygen and convert into hypochlorites and hydroxyl anions. This will cause decomposition of all organic compounds present in water and hydrogen sulfides are formed.
2. Removal of sulfide
Ammoniacal brine solution is used to remove sulfide from the water. However, ammoniacal brine solution is not recommended for the removal of free sulfur compounds. The reason being that both free sulfur and methyl mercaptan are reduced to hydrogen sulfide as a product of oxidation. This will lead to increase in odor instead of reducing the odor we want to reduce. Ammoniacal brine solutions can remove all suspended materials in the water by causing coagulation during the process of oxidation. Sulfides present in the water will then be oxidized into sulfates and removed along with coagulation.
3. Removal of nitrates and nitrites
Ammoniacal brine solution is used to remove nitrates and nitrites from water. Nitrates form when the reaction between nitrogen and chlorine occurs while forming ammonium chloride. Ammonium chloride then react with nitrite ions present in water to form ammonium sulfate.
4. Removal of phenols and phenoxy acids
Ammoniacal brine can also remove phenols, phenol compounds, diphenyl ethers, benzoic acid and other chlorophenols as a result of oxidation reactions.
5. Removal of mercaptans
Mercaptans are released from numerous substances such as trash cans and breakdown of plastics. Ammoniacal brines can be used to reduce the smell that is produced by released mercaptans by oxidizing them and converting them into harmless sulfates. The reaction between mercaptans and ammonia yields sulfide, which is then converted into sulfate by reaction with chlorine.
6. Ammoniacal brine solution is also used in the textile industry and in the food industry.

8. Textile industry use
Ammoniacal brine is also used in the textile industry. Ammoniacal brine solution is used in the process of mercerization and this is because it has cleaning and bleaching properties. Mercerization is a process that involves the immersing of fabric into hot water that contains ammmonia solution and this helps to remove impurities and other materials that could cause problems such as mildew during weaving and dyeing. However, it should be noted that success of mercerization as a result of use of ammoniacal brine depends on several factors such as composition of water, temperature of water, temperature at which fabric will be immersed into the solution etc.
