How To Make Acetic Acid Using Household Ingredients Like A Pro

ECHEMI 2022-11-23

How to make acetic acid using household ingredients is one of the most commonly asked questions. This is so because acetic acid, also known as ethanoic acid can be used for multi purposes such as baking, cleaning and food preservation. Given the significant roles, this colorless, sourtasting liquid with a boiling point of 118.0℃ and a melting point of 16.7℃ has its only right if you know how to make it using household ingredients. So, if you are looking for tips on how to make ethanoic acid using household ingredients, then read on as we got you covered through this article.

How to make acetic acid using household ingredients

#1. Assemble or purchase all the necessary ingredients

The following ingredients are essential for making acetic acid;

· A Vinegar starter which can be either domestically produced or commercially bought from a convenient store

· Wine

· Distilled or purified water

If you don't prefer using a mixture of wine and purified water, you can use beer or hard cider (with an alcohol by volume (ABV) of more than 5%).

#2. Gather all the necessary equipment

To avoid confusion and speed up this process, please gather everything you will need to use. Below are some of the things you will need when making acetic acid in your home;

· 2 clean jars (although you will need one jar, it would be best if you have 2 clean jars for emergency)

· A clean piece of cloth (most preferable cheesecloth)

· 4 rubber bands

· Measuring spoons

#3. Start by sterilizing and disinfecting a glass jar

It's essential that you disinfect and sterilize the glass jar you will use to produce ethanoic acid. Through disinfection and sterilization, you will be able to prepare acetic acid that is contaminant free. Below is the procedure to follow when sterilizing and disinfecting your glass jar;

· Scrub the exterior and the interior of the jar with a sponge dipped in mild dish soap for 2 minutes

· Rinse it in running tap water for 1-2 minute

· To sterilize the jar's exterior, steam it over boiling water for 10-20 minutes. Do this by holding the jar with sterilized tongs over the steam

· Place the jar on a clean and dry surface and fill it with boiling water

· Let the water sit in the jar for 5 minutes before pouring it

To avoid shattering your glass jar, please make sure that your jar isn't cold when pouring the boiling water into it. First, warm it by rinsing it with warm or hot water.

#4. Mix white or red wine and purified water in the jar

In the ratio of 1:1 mix either white or red wine and purified water in the sterilized glass jar. This ratio helps balance the acidity level of these 2 ingredients. You can either use white or red wine. To avoid contaminating your acetic acid or introducing unwanted flavors, make sure you only purified water.

You can use any type of beer or hard cider with ABV of less than 5% produce acetic acid if you don't have wine and purified water. It's also possible to use other alcoholic drinks with an ABV of more than 5%, provided that you dilute the alcohol with clean warm water to lower the alcohol content

#5. Add the vinegar starter (mother') into the jar

In the glass jar containing the mixture of wine and purified water, pour either readymade or domestically produced 'mother of vinegar. This vinegar starter contains the Acetobacteria bacteria. Acetobacter are the bacteria that convert ethanol into acetic acid. The mother of vinegar can either be jelly-like in liquid for. For ease of production of acetic acid, always consider using the liquid form of vinegar starter since it's much easier to measure and mix.

#6. Gently enclose the container by using a clean permeable piece of cloth

Fold your permeable piece of cloth into 2 layers and lay it on the top of your glass jar. Use 2 tensile elastic bands to keep this piece of cloth in place.

Do not seal your glass jar with an airtight lid. Remember, the bacteria that turn will turn the wine or hard cider (alcohol) into acetic acid are aerobic. Aerobic bacteria are bacteria that require oxygen to thrive and function. Thus, by sealing the container with an airtight lid you will deprive these bacteria of oxygen.

#7. Carefully place the jar in a clean, dry, dark, and adequately ventilated location

Consider placing your jar on the topmost shelf of your pantry. Let your glass container sit undisturbed for at least 8 weeks. By doing so you will facilitate the conversion of ethanol (alcohol) to ethanoic acid by the acetobacter bacteria. Don't open, whisk, mix or shake the jar during this period.

In case you are unable to find a dimly lighted spot in your home, then consider wrapping your glass container a thick clean kitchen towel.

If you properly follow these steps, then you are bound to notice a smell of vinegar and musty scents emanating your jar before the 8 weeks period elapses. And if you happen to notice the scents, please don't open the glass container or stir it unless the 8 weeks period has elapsed.

How to make acetic acid using household ingredients

The following are the directions to follow when producing ethanoic acid using household ingredients; Assemble both equipment and ingredients required to make acetic acid. Sterilize 2 glass jars. In the ratio of 1:1, mix red or white wine and purified water in your glass jar.

To start the fermentation process add the 'mother' of vinegar into the jar containing alcohol and purified water. Seal the container with a clean piece of cloth that allows air to freely circulate. Carefully store it in a dark, cool, clean and sufficiently ventilated spot. Do not whisk, mix, shake or open it until 8 weeks are over.
