What are the medicinal uses of benzoic acid

ECHEMI 2022-12-02

The medicinal uses of benzoic acid are diverse, with many different uses. It has been used for centuries as a treatment for syphilis, high cholesterol levels, weight loss, asthma and other respiratory ailments, and more. It is one of the most widely available organic compounds found in nature that has a long history of use in various medicinal compounds and supplements. Unfortunately benzoic acid is not always safe to use due to its potentially toxic effects on the immune system and blood vessels that may result in bleeding or even death. However when taken orally it is still fairly safe because benzoic acid must first be metabolized into salicylic acid before the body can absorb it into cells.

Medicinal uses of benzoic acid

1. Benzoic acid is used in the treatment of obesity

In a study conducted in 2006 by Audrey Gaskins, using dieting obese patients it showed that benzoic acid can help to reduce their body weight within a period of time. The average weight loss observed was 5.1% of their body weight within one month and a half. This could be due to the fact that the chemical has a thermogenic function.

2. Benzoic acid can be used as a treatment for high cholesterol

In a study conducted by Ahmed et al., 2010, it was shown that benzoic acid is effective in lowering LDL and total cholesterol levels of serum. In addition, it reduced triglyceride levels significantly. This indicates that benzoic acid can also be used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, or high cholesterol conditions in people who are at risk for cardiovascular diseases due to their high levels of LDL or triglycerides and high chance of getting atherosclerosis.

3. Benzoic acid is used as a treatment for asthma

As with other asthma drugs, Benzoic acid is also used as an asthma treatment drug. Although it has not been as effective on its own in treating the condition, it has been shown to be very effective when combined with other drugs that are more potent. In a study conducted by Gary A. Baker et al., 2010, benzoic acid was found to be extremely effective in reducing the severity of respiratory distress and allergen sensitivity in patients who had been diagnosed with seasonal and perennial allergies. This was due to the fact that it works great at clearing out pungent allergic reactions, such as those caused by mold spores.

4. Benzoic acid is used as a treatment for hiccups

In the study conducted by Li et al., 2007, benzoic acid was shown to be effective in diminishing the frequency of hiccups and the intensity of spasms in patients suffering from hiccups. Although it does not have any effect on the underlying cause of hiccups, it still has some potential for future use as a treatment.

5. Benzoic acid can be used as an anti-cancer medication

Benzoic acid has also been known to be very effective when it comes to fighting cancer . In a number of studies done by Wang et al. in 2013, benzoic acid has been shown to have anti-cancer effects. Tests done on cells and animals have found that the chemical can stop tumors from reproducing by inhibiting the ability to grow. This has led to many studies on using benzoic acid as an anti-cancer drug in order to treat various types of cancer.

6. Benzoic acid is used as a treatment for seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff

Seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff are common problems in people with oily skin. The condition occurs because of excessive production of sebum in the skin. Through studies conducted by Lim et al., 2011, it was shown that benzoic acid can help to reduce the appearance and the severity of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff by inhibiting the activity of a certain gene called 14-3-3. This results in decreased levels of this protein which is responsible for causing inflammation in people with oily skin conditions.

7. Benzoic acid can be used as a treatment for muscle relaxation

In a study conducted by Cooper et al. in 2011, it was shown that benzoic acid works well for muscle relaxation. It helps to provide muscles with the necessary amount of nutrients so that muscle relaxation will be more effective. This is one of the medicinal uses of benzoic acid.

8. Benzoic acid is used as a treatment for diabetes in rabbits

In a study conducted by Dings et al., 1987, benzoic acid was found to have an inhibitory effect on the formation of blood glucose and on the absorption of glucose in diabetic rabbits by reducing its insulin production. This makes benzoic acid very useful in treating diabetes in people who have high levels of insulin levels or who struggle with proper blood sugar regulation caused by any type of diabetes.

In conclusion, the medicinal uses of benzoic acid are many and varied. It has been shown to be very effective in treating a number of conditions, such as obesity, high cholesterol, asthma, hiccups and more. They work by breaking down fats and sugars that cause complications in the body. Used together with other medications it is safe to use this chemical as a treatment for various health conditions.
