Japan's agricultural exports may reach a new high, with China the most

According to the Nikkei Chinese, Japan's exports of agriculture, forestry and fishery products and food in 2022 have reached 1.1218 trillion yen (57.1 billion yuan) as of October, exceeding the 1 trillion yen mark for two consecutive years and one month ahead of schedule. It is basically a foregone conclusion that the full-year data exceeded the record high of the previous year. The Japanese government is also considering bringing forward the target of achieving 2 trillion yen in exports from the original 2025 target.

According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on December 5, the export value in January~October increased by 148.6 billion yen over the same period of the previous year, about 7.567 billion yuan (15.3%). By country and region, exports to China rose 24.5% to 229.3 billion yen (about 116.77 yuan), the largest amount. Scallops and alcoholic beverages are popular. Exports to the United States increased by 20.8% to 165.5 billion yen (about 8.428 billion yuan). The new crown epidemic in the United States and Europe is subsiding, and catering demand is recovering.

At the relevant ministerial meeting on the 5th, the Japanese government proposed a new strategy to increase the number of production areas that meet the relevant regulations of food hygiene and quarantine of export destinations. A system of joint support will be established between prefectures, the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) of Japan, and regional trading companies.

The Ministerial Conference also decided to include koi in key categories with greater scope for export expansion. Koi is a colorful fish that is a favorite aquarium fish overseas. So far, 28 categories such as beef, scallops and whiskey have been designated. For "category groups" in which the entire industry works together to promote the export of these categories, 4 groups in 11 categories have been newly identified.

In terms of expanding the scope of exports, import restrictions on Japanese products following the 2011 accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant remain an obstacle. The trend of easing restrictions expanded in 2022, with countries such as Indonesia and the United Kingdom lifting restrictions, but 12 countries and regions still maintain restrictions. After spring 2023, treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant will be discharged into the ocean. Details on scientific safety, etc. need to be published in detail.
