Assisted by the epidemic situation, the global spice buying eruption!

ECHEMI 2020-07-01

Turmeric, ginger and other spice spices have recently exploded, because the epidemic has increased consumer demand for strengthening immunity, and spice spices with a "healthy aura" have become a target for everyone to buy, benefiting production in Asia and other places Quotient.

According to Nielsen, a consumer data group, during the 14 weeks ending June 6, retail sales of ginger in the United States surged 94% from the same period last year, turmeric increased by 68%, and garlic increased by 62%.

Singaporean agricultural trader Olam said demand for turmeric in India increased by 20% compared with a year ago, and demand for ginger and black pepper in Vietnam increased by 65% and 15%, respectively.

AR Azeem, which purchases spices from Asia through Legend Exim, a subsidiary of its Indian company, and sends them to the international market, said that Burma Turmeric, which he trades, has surged by more than 30% in the past three months.

Azim said: "The COVID-19 will only increase the demand for spices... Although the supply chain is disrupted, we try to meet the buyer's requirements as much as possible."

The concept of "healthy aura" food has been popular since the 1990s, from California almonds to "superfoods" such as kale and avocado. Some healthy arguments are indeed scientifically based, but some foods are only popular for a while.

Melentin, director of New Nutrition Business, a consulting firm, said: "The arrival of the new coronavirus has stimulated consumer interest in immune-related foods and ingredients."

Melentin pointed out that European consumers are snapping up lemons and oranges rich in vitamin C; garlic, ginger and honey have received much attention because they are touted on social media. Orange juice is among the best performing commodities this year.

De Sousa, CEO of Tata Consumer Products, the parent company of Tetley Tea, said that according to his observations, consumers have recently turned to more "natural" and "healthy" products.

People in South Asia often drink turmeric milk, thinking that it has the effect of strengthening the immune system. In recent years, under the blessing of celebrities such as Hollywood movie stars, even the coffee chain Starbucks has launched turmeric latte, which shows that the turmeric boom has spread out of India and spread around the world.

Butani, a farmer in western India, said that during the blockade period, despite the decline in demand for yam, mango and other crops, turmeric sales increased by about 40%. "I am very happy and made a fortune."

Kay Bee, a vegetable and fruit exporter, has caused a significant increase in freight costs due to the epidemic, reducing the shipment of its main products such as mango, and filling some of the gaps by significantly increasing the export of turmeric.
